A Virtual Slave

Are you one of the virtual slaves these days? Well, I think in some ways I am; however, I do try my very best to avoid being so.

How can we say if one is already under the spell of the virtual magic? Basically,if you spend most of your waking moments in front of the gadget called computer then you're most likely a certified virtual slave. How so? Let me try to count the ways.

*You wake up in the morning and the first thing you do is turn on the computer and plug in the internet. You become so engrossed with whatever you're doing that you totally forget the time and now you have to hurry and get yourself ready for work lest you'll be late.

*You arrive at work -you're lucky if you're not late- and you let your co-workers feel your presence by saying a quick hello or greet them a good morning then off you go to your own desk or station to turn on your computer where you'll be stuck working your a** for the next eight hours or so -not counting the over times.

*The clock strikes five -or whatever time you're off work- you fight your way amidst the crowd who are all in a hurry to get home, brave the heavily congested roads doing your very best not to let loose of your temper, finally, you're home! You kiss and say hello to your love ones, you summarize your not-so-exciting day and ask them about their day too while having dinner. Then, it's time once again to sit in front of your most favorite human creation and discovery -the computer. You browse and surf forgetting the time, depriving your body of its much needed rest.

Now, do you realize how we all become a virtual slave? And we ask ourselves, why do we do it? Why do we sacrifice so much for it? For fun? For passion? For knowledge? For money?
And so, is it worth it? I have to go find the answer myself. One thing I know and I do believe in is, once we are already forcing ourselves to do something, whatever it is, becomes synonymous to WORK.
So what shall we do? I think it's about time we take a moment to breathe and enjoy the profound beauty that brought us into doing whatever it is that hooked us into the cyber world.

Have fun and enjoy blogging everyone! ^_^

MM - There You'll Be - Faith Hill

It's a beautiful Monday morning and once again it's time for Music Monday. This week's featured artist is Faith Hill (born Audrey Faith Perry on September 21, 1967). She is one of my favorite country singers. Her soulful and raspy voice make her songs uniquely her own. The song "There You'll Be" which was also the official soundtrack of the equally unforgettable movie Pearl Harbor is one of my most favorite songs to sing in videoke. If you're not familiar, singing in videoke is one of the favorite past times of many Filipinos. I just love the very touching words and perfect melody of the song.

MM - I Stay In Love - Mariah Carey

The fourth single by Mariah Carey from her eleventh studio album, E=MC² is one of my favorite songs these days. Even at work I kept on playing this song over and over again. I'm a big MC fan and with this new hit single she has proven once and again that she still has a lot to offer for all her fans and followers and her brand of music has its own niche in the music world. Here's MC sexier than ever and blooming with her new found love.

"A Filipina We Can Be Proud Of"

I came across an article in Asian Journal which really made me happy for a "kababayan" and likewise, made me feel proud to be a Filipina. With so much pain, suffering and ugliness of this world featured everyday in the papers, and in all forms of media, I can't help but feel a bit lighthearted and at the same time relieved by the fact that somehow they still feature articles that could make the readers smile or at this point, feel proud.

(Monessa Catuncan)

UNITED States Air Force F-16 fighter pilot Monessa Catuncan doesn't just maneuver an aircraft whenever she's on air—she also carries the Philippine flag and the pride of the country it represents and the people in it. The F-16 Fighting Falcon or most commonly known as the "Viper" is a state-of-the- art fighter aircraft. It has been a high-performance weapon system for the US and allied nations for it has been used in numerous air-to-air combats. This specific aircraft has exceeded all the potential threat fighter aircrafts. Its feature as an offense-defense weapon is very precise that it can perform on any weather condition. This kind of plane is a complicated device meant to be handled by highly qualified pilots. The F-16 or the Viper has played vital roles in most of America's wars with the most recent being in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. An F-16 fighter plane is what Monessa Catuncan navigates. But before Monessa even set foot to the elite US Air Force, this humble Pinay, like almost everybody else earned her way to success. The twenty-six-year- old Monessa is the youngest daughter of Ramons and Teody Catuncan of Mesquite, Texas. She graduated in 2000 as a Valedictorian in a class of 693 in Mesquite High School. She was then accepted to the United States Air Force Academy (USAFA) in Colorado Springs, that same year. While at USAFA, Monessa, aside from pursuing her desired career as part of the US Air Force, served as a Squadron Commander, a Division-1 tennis player, a Glider Instructor Pilot, and a member of the Glider Acrobatic Team, among other essential positions. In 2004, Monessa graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Astronautical Engineering from the USAFA. Like all of her colleagues, Monessa went through an Undergraduate Pilot Training (UPT) before becoming a fighter pilot. However, she didn't just pass her UPT – she excelled in it. She then started her pilot career flying a T-6 Texan at the Moody Air Force Base in Valdosta, Georgia. This aircraft is the basic trainer for every Air Force aspiring pilots. After this training, students will then choose whether to fly fighter/bomber aircrafts or cargo/refueling aircrafts. Most of the time, only top students in the class are given the option to fly fighter/bomber aircrafts. Monessa proved herself, and finished the course as one of the top student-pilots in her class. She was then chosen to fly either a fighter or a bomber aircraft. After her course at Moody Air Force, she went to Laughlin Air Force Base in Del Rio, Texas and Sheppard Air Force Base in Wichita Falls to fly the T-38. In her training there, Monessa learned the basics of formation flying, offensive and defensive fighter maneuvering, and surface attack bombing techniques. Monessa went through intense studying and was put in a variety of stressful situations in order to pass this training.. From flying T- 38, she had an option of choosing from different aircrafts like the F-15E Strike Eagle, F-15C Eagle, F-16 Fighting Falcon, B-1B Lancer, A-10 Warthog, B-52 Stratofortress, and F/A-22 Raptor, and T-6 or T-38 are also options. After her T-38 course, Monessa requested to fly an F-16 Falcon, and she got what she wanted. Monessa went through with her training to hone her skill at maneuvering fighter jets at Luke Air Force Base in Phoenix, Arizona where she learned how to control and apply tactics of the F-16 Fighter Falcon, or Viper. Monessa finished her course at Luke Air Force Base with flying colors and was part of the "Lucky number 13" graduate from class 2007. She was the only woman in her group, not to mention the only Filipino to pass the much-coveted pilot course. Monessa, who just recently pinned on Captain, is now assigned to 34th Fighter Squadron at Hill Air Force Base in Salt Lake City, Utah. She and her squadron just recently came back from Iraq where they served and supported the Army Troops on the ground through a variety of close air support missions. The US Air Force is an elite organization and to a pilot, an F-16 fighter plane is a prized possession. Monessa, through her perseverance and hard work, has earned not only the fly the F-16, but also the pride and honor of defending the United States, as well as making the Filipinos proud.

MM - You’re The Inspiration - Chicago

For this week's MM, I'll be featuring a song by Peter Cetera best known for being an original member of the rock band Chicago, before launching a successful solo career. I became familiar with the song when I was still in High School. My father is a music enthusiast and he's so into rock music of 70's & 80's. He kept on playing his tapes of Chicago and other rock bands on our old cassette player until I learned to like the songs and eventually became a music lover too.

By the way, to all Pinoy fans and followers of this Grammy Award winning singer/songwriter, we all have the chance to watch and listen as he performs live here in Manila on February 14, 2009 at Araneta Coliseum. I wish my honey and I could watch the show. But for now, let's just all be inspired and be more in love as we listen to his song "You're The Inspiration".

YOU'RE THE INSPIRATION (Chicago)

You know our love was meant to be
The kind of love that lasts forever
And I need you here with me
From tonight until the end of time

You should know, everywhere I go
You're always on my mind,
in my heart In my soul

You're the meaning in my life
You're the inspiration
You bring feeling to my life
You're the inspiration
Wanna have you near me
I wanna have you hear me sayin'
No one needs you more than I need you

And I know, yes I know that it's plain to see
We're so in love when we're together
And I know that I need you here with me
From tonight until the end of time

You should know, everywhere I go
You're always on my mind,
in my heart In my soul

You're the meaning in my life
You're the inspiration
You bring feeling to my life
You're the inspiration
Wanna have you near me
I wanna have you hear me sayin'
No one needs you more than I need you

New Year's Gift and Some Addictions

My honey and I made our own tradition of giving each other presents every new year. I thought of giving him a new watch since I know that he's been wanting to buy one for months. Guess what his gift for me is? Yeah right, it's a watch too. I was so ecstatic and kept on raving about it for days. Not to mention the fact the it's been my favorite watch these days. LOL!

My honey knows me too well and I'm glad he does because he really knows what would make me happy. I don't know why but I am so passionate about watches. If some women are into shoes or bags or the latest trends in clothing, I am all about watches. I love wearing them and so, I splurge on them. Yikes! I am trying really hard to control my addiction though because I know that these are really not good investments. But sometimes, I just love to see and enjoy the fruits of my labor. So just bear with me if I'm still raving about it. *Wink*

My fave watch nowadays...

This is what I got for my honey and I'm glad he loves it too...

I hope he'll thought of giving me more and more watches. LOL! X.O.X.O. ^_^

By the way, speaking of addictions, I was in Fully Booked in The Fort last Saturday. I spent the whole day feasting on my must-have books. I had the chance to read the book "Skinny Bitch" written by Rory Freedman and Kim Barnouin. To those who are addicted on the idea of getting skinny the book has some interesting points for you. It won't make you a bitch though. That I promise. But that was indeed a brilliant idea from the authors. It was quite a catchy title which was why it caught my attention too.

Other interesting books on my list are "Confessions of a Shopaholic" and "Shopaholic Takes Manhattan"by Sophie Kinsella which is now a movie in the making top billed by Isla Fisher as Rebecca or Becky Bloomwood. Needless to say the books and the movie is all about a woman who is addicted to shopping -in short, a hopeless shopaholic. The book is actually a series. For now, I'm just interested in reading the two I mentioned above since most of the movie story line were based on these. The movie is set to be released on Febuary 13, 2009. I know this is something most of the shopaholics are waiting for. Take note though, I am not a certified shopaholic and no plans on being one (but just because I can't afford to be one). LOL!

Cheers everyone! Happy shopping!!! ^_^

MSUans Reunited!

I was so happy when after my almost five years of stay here in Manila, I finally heard from one of my friends in college. It was the New Year's eve when I received a greetings through SMS from an unknown number. I was curious to know who sent me good wishes, so I replied back asking who the sender is and to my surprise it was Elgane! She was a classmate and a friend back in college at Mindanao State University-General Santos City. Right then and there, through several exchange of SMS, we made a plan to get together with some other college friends whom she came in contact with. Most of them were off work on New Year's day but I got to report to work that night-which was really unfortunate- so we agreed to meet the following day.

The three of us, Elgane, Janis & I, met at Ayala MRT station and from there we rode one of the shuttles to our way to Serendra in The Fort. It was such a nice place and one of the fastest growing business hubs here in Manila. Tagged to be "the next Makati" the place truly has a lot of potentials and fresh opportunities to offer. We had coffee and chatted for a while at Starbuck's in Fully Booked while waiting for our other friend, Gay-Gay, to arrive. Apparently, Gay-Gay's husband who happens to be an MSUan too, received a call from his boss asking him to drop by his work place to attend to some important stuff. So obviously, they can't join us for lunch. The three of us had lunch without them then. We decided to have a simple meal at Gerry's Grill. After an hour, Gay-Gay and her husband, Israel, arrived. We left The Fort and headed to La Mesa Ecopark to spend the rest of the afternoon. The place was perfect. It felt like we're back in the province with the fresh and cold air and the trees around, it was really a hidden paradise within the city. Since we hadn't seen one another for the longest time, we grabbed that moment to catch up on each other's lives and of course, had fun traveling down memory lane. LOL.

Below are some captured moments for keeps:

(Mystique with Elgane)

(Mystique with Janis)

(With Gay-Gay, Israel, Janis & Elgane @ Gerry's Grill)

(On our way to La Mesa Ecopark)

(Having a great time @ the park)

(Mystique's Moments)

(More & more pixel perfect moments)

By the way, to all MSUans out there, I'd like to invite you to join GMN (Global MSUans Network). It's one great way to get reunited with our fellow MSUans. A million thanks to Gagay for sharing the link.

May we all have a great week ahead! X.O.X.O. ^_^

Music Monday '09

I'm just so excited that I'm finally part of Music Monday group. Being a great fan of music, I'd like to share with you guys the songs I love to hear over and over again. Music that in one way or another have touched me and somehow became my song as I could deeply relate to it. This is one way also for me to drop my two cents on your favorite songs and learn more about different genres of music and the great artists behind it.

To start off the new year here's one of my favorite songs, You Gotta Be recorded by the British pop and soul singer Des'ree. It was the first single from her second album I Ain't Movin.

The music video is filmed in black and white. In 1995, it was nominated in the category of "Best Female Video" at the MTV Video Music Awards, but did not win.

I chose this as my song for today as I feel a bit apprehensive yet at the same time excited to face what awaits me this 2009. Listening to it just makes me feel a whole lot better. Well, who wouldn't be?

Let's just all enjoy the song which was performed with Des'ree's perfect soft voice accompanied with words that really make sense.

Happy Monday everyone! ^_^

You Gotta Be lyrics

Listen as your day unfolds
Challenge what the future holds
Try and keep your head up to the sky

Lovers, they may cause you tears
Go ahead release your fears
Stand up and be counted
Don't be ashamed to cry

You gotta be You gotta be bad, you gotta be bold
You gotta be wiser, you gotta be hard
You gotta be tough, you gotta be stronger
You gotta be cool, you gotta be calm
You gotta stay together
All I know, all I know, love will save the day

Herald what your mother said
Readin' the books your father read
Try to solve the puzzles in your own sweet time
Some may have more cash than you
Others take a different view
My oh my, hey ...

You gotta be You gotta be bad, you gotta be bold
You gotta be wiser, you gotta be hard
You gotta be tough, you gotta be stronger
You gotta be cool, you gotta be calm
You gotta stay together
All I know, all I know, love will save the day

Time asks no questions, it goes on without you
Leaving you behind if you can't stand the pace
The world keeps on spinning
You can't stop it, if you try to
This time it's danger staring you in the face
Oh oh oh

Remember listen as your day unfoldes
Challenge what the future holds
Try and keep your head up to the sky

Lovers, they may cause you tears
Go ahead release your fears
My oh my hey hey hey..

You gotta be You gotta be bad, you gotta be bold
You gotta be wiser, you gotta be hard
You gotta be tough, you gotta be stronger
You gotta be cool, you gotta be calm
You gotta stay together
All I know, all I know, love will save the day

You gotta be bold you gotta be bad you gotta be wise, no never sad you gotta be hard but not to too hard,
All i know, all i know love will save the day

You gotta be bad you gotta be bold u gotta be wiser u gotta be hard u gotta be hard u gotta be cool you gotta be tough u gotta stay together
